Winter in California can reveal some real magic of light. Every year during a small period of time (mid-December to mid-January), when the sun sets in the southwest, a ray of mystical light appears in the Keyhole Arch at the Pfeiffer Beach, California, and creates wonderful opportunities for such an amazing moment to capture this fairy tale. The angle of the rays changes from day to day. For several weeks the sun has been setting just behind the arch. Although there are only a few minutes at sunset to enjoy this spectacular view, you need to arrive early, preferably a couple of hours in advance, as there is limited space in front of the stage.
Pfeiffer State Beach is famously known as the purple sand beach in Big Sur California. The purple hues are caused by the different minerals present in the sand. Sand is usually mostly composed of quartz, but at this beach you will find areas of concentrated garnet.
