Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began on January 5, 1933, and took over four years to complete. Construction was not without its challenges. The site was known for its strong winds, frequent fog, and treacherous waters. The workers also had to contend with dangerous heights and the risk of falling into the water below. Despite these challenges, the construction of the Bridge was completed on time and within budget. It opened to the public on May 27, 1937, and was celebrated as a great engineering feat. Today, the bridge stands as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of its builders, and it remains one of the most recognizable and beloved landmarks in the world.
I arrived at the bridge about an hour before sunset, eager to photograph the majestic structure against a colorful sky. By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, I had gotten some really pretty images; these gold and magenta hues during sunset were my favorite. The light just prior to sunset was so beautiful... so much so I hardly noticed when the incoming tide caught me off-guard and sloshed over the tops of my hiking boots. Geez I was going to regret THAT later! But lost in the moment, all that was on my mind was to photograph the scene as it changed. There is beauty all around us all the time, but we miss it because we let other things take our attention away. So here I stood, ankle deep in surf, completely absorbed in my task – getting the best photo I could of sand, rocks, sea, sky, and a bridge. And I did!
I hiked back to my car in the dark; seawater squishing in my boots as I contemplated on exactly how to clean and dry them before tomorrow's sunrise adventure. But I was a happy soul, content in the knowledge that I had just captured a beautiful scene that will always remind me of this trip.
