The first thing I like to do when I get to a new city I'm planning on photographing is look at the tourist-trap postcard racks and find the most cliché, overdone, and well-known landmarks and sights of that city... and then shoot those exact same places, but in a completely different way, putting my own spin on things. And that's exactly what I did here, with this cold autumn New York City sunset.
I took this shot from D.U.M.B.O., Brooklyn (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). I wanted to capture the sunset and the older, industrial feel of this neighborhood with the rich sepia tones. I got onto the shore itself and got the camera down really low, just above the cold water. The view of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge was visually stunning and I felt the lower I got the camera, the more it made it look like you were there yourself. This was my first shot of the New York skyline, from the East.
