My journey to the legendary Machu Picchu began in the enchanting town of Aguas Calientes. Nestled deep in the Andes, this vibrant little town is a must-visit stop for anyone making their way to the ancient ruins. Its narrow streets, bustling with life, and the dramatic backdrop of lush mountains create a setting that feels both timeless and alive.
At the center of it all is the Pachacutec Statue, an iconic tribute to one of the greatest Incan rulers. The statue stands tall in the square, its golden hue catching the light and drawing your attention. What made it even more special were the birds that would swoop down and perch on the statue, as if paying their own tribute. Watching them circle overhead before landing gave the scene a living, dynamic quality.
When I photographed the statue, I wanted to approach it differently. Typically, the vibrant colors of Aguas Calientes are what bring it to life, but I chose to experiment with contrast. I captured the scene in black and white but kept the golden hue of the statue intact, allowing it to stand out as the centerpiece of the image.
This creative choice highlighted the timeless beauty of the statue while giving the photo a unique and artistic edge. The golden figure of Pachacutec seemed even more powerful against the monochromatic backdrop, and the birds added a sense of life and motion to the frame.
It’s an image that feels as dynamic and full of history as Aguas Calientes itself. I can’t wait to return, to once again immerse myself in this town’s charm and capture new perspectives of its unforgettable landmarks.
